Woman suffers “closure” of the vulva after a long time without sexual intercourse: is it normal?

A strange medical case caught the attention of doctors in Japan. In short, a 76-year-old lady went to a clinic for cancer treatment when doctors noticed something strange: her labia had merged. That is, the lady only had a small hole to eliminate urine, her vulva was “closed”

Glued vaginal lips

The case was announced in the Journal of Medical Case Reports. According to the doctors, the old woman did not consider the phenomenon strange until she was taken to the department of gynecological surgeries. There, through a tomography, accumulations in the area of the vagina were identified.

After a visual analysis, the doctors noticed that the lips were stuck: they had melted. The accumulations found in the test were urine not eliminated. Because the hole was so small, the woman had not been able to remove all the necessary volume.

As the doctors say in the report, the old woman had no complaints about pain or difficulty urinating. The only problem described was that urination was a bit long. The patient had been in menopause since she was 40 years old and had never undergone any exams, neither Pap smear nor detection of cervical cancer. Fortunately, the tests ruled out possible infections. After that, the patient reported having had two vaginal parties without major trauma or infection. Those could have been relevant factors to explain the case. Having ruled out these causes, the specialists opted for the “decrease in activity in the area,” that is, the lack of sex with penetration. Currently, the patient’s lips were separated with a surgical procedure under anesthesia and she is well. Lip fusion: how does it happen?

According to gynecologist Élvio Floresti, lip fusion is related to the decrease of estrogen in the body. The hormone is only present in menstruating women. According to the doctor, the lack of this substance leaves the patients more vulnerable to poor scarring in the area. ADVERTISING Among other functions, estrogen is important for the maturation of sexual organs, as it provides an extra layer of protection to the lips and prevents them from touching. This also gives the vagina elasticity for the sexual act. For this reason, the fusion of the vaginal lips can occur both in girls up to 10 years of age, who still do not produce this hormone, as in adult women who started menopause and do not produce more estrogen. How common is it?

“In most cases, the vagina of old women closes and only leaves an opening for the passage of urine,” says Floresti. According to him, the fusion is more common in the old women, because they do not usually have sexual relations. Sexual relationships help keep the lips apart. In many cases, due to menopause and lack of lubrication and elasticity, the relationships become too painful. “If the old woman continues to have sex, the canal remains intact, but if there is no sex, it is possible for one lip to rest on the other and create adhesion,” says the expert.

In the case of this lady in particular, the situation was aggravated by chemotherapy. With such treatment, the mucous membranes become more sensitive and vaginal fusion becomes more likely.

TreatmentTreatments that require a surgical procedure are rare, says Floresti. These treatments are only indicated when the lips are in an advanced adherence stage. In most cases, the use of estrogen-based creams and gels are sufficient to promote separation of the parts.
